With turmoil at the top, help local people take control at sea-level

by Rowena Hoseason

Hi!

We’re the local community in Bude and last year we raised the substantial amount of cash needed to save beautiful Bude Sea Pool from council incompetence.

Now we’re reaching out for sea-level support to help us deal with an onslaught of national and local Government directives and break free once and for all.

It’s been made clear to us at Friends of Bude Sea Pool that if the running costs and responsibility for the Pool aren’t taken on by the local community then it’ll shut next year.

The council will probably demolish it to ‘make it safe.’

This would be a travesty of community politics.

The Sea Pool is open access from the beach and free to use.

Most visitors think they pay for it by paying to park in the beach car parks; most local businesses think they pay for it in their business rates, and most local home owners think they pay for it in their council tax.

But under ‘localism’, a volunteer charity community group will have to generate between 30,000 and 50,000 each year to keep it open in future — wastefully duplicating infrastructure and systems, losing expertise, and reinventing a few wheels in the process.

The Friends of Bude Sea Pool ARE prepared to stand up and from 2012 accept responsibility for what is an important tourist attraction, a benefit to the wider community, a source of local employment and an historic 1930s construction.

It is ridiculous that we have to do this.

The Leisure Services dept of Cornwall Council actively supports events like the Big Cornwall Swim, a one-off event which gave 175 people access to a reservoir, yet it won’t pay to life-guard Bude’s sea pool which provides safe swimming for that many people every single day during the summer season.

Worse yet… if Bude’s sea pool were to close, then all the vulnerable swimmers who normally use it would be forced into the sea, in turn requiring more life-guards to be stationed on the beach.

So there would be no cost saving whatsoever.

This is all just political paper-shuffling; budget-fudging of the worst order.

Are we ticked off about it?

You bet.

Are we doing something about it?

Of course!

The Sea Pool is too valuable to allow it to fall by the wayside due to political ineptitude.

If you’d like to get on board and help us save the Sea Pool from official incompetence and hand it back to local people, just click HERE

Did You Know?

The historic tidal swimming pool at Bude in north Cornwall provides safe bathing in beautiful surroundings. Thanks for the FoBSP, it’s open this summer and is FREE for all to enjoy

The Pool was created in the 1930s to provide safe swimming at Summerleaze beach. It’s open access from the beach and is free to use.

The sea-water Pool is nearly 100m long and is topped up twice a day at high tide. Very few tidal pools of this type still exist in the UK: we know of just a handful that are still open.

In recent years, Bude Sea Pool was run by Cornwall Council, but funding for the pool was withdrawn in late 2010.

A vigorous campaign convinced the Council to keep the pool open for the 2011 season, but from 2012 the Council indicated that the pool would close, be permanently demolished, or transferred to a third party.

Our volunteer, not-for-profit community group, the Friends of Bude Sea Pool, was formed in summer 2011 to secure the Pool’s future. A 99-year lease was agreed and management of the Sea Pool was formally passed to the FoBSP on 30th March 2012.

In the year since fund-raising begun, the FoBSP raised over £50,000 towards the Sea Pool’s running costs and successfully completed Phase One of crucial structural repairs to the Pool. Over 4800 people now follow the FoBSP’s activities on Facebook.

Annual membership of the FoBSP costs £10 for adults, £5 for under-16s, £25 for families.

Further information about the Sea Pool and the work of the FoBSP can be found at Bude Sea Pool

£600

by Tamsin Thomas

A woman from York who was rescued by RNLI lifeguards on Polzeath beach last summer after nearly drowning has walked approximately 40 miles from Bude to Polzeath to raise money for the lifesaving charity.

Isabella Denyer completed the hike on Tuesday afternoon, after setting off on Saturday, and met with lifeguards at the finish. She hopes to raise more than £600 for the RNLI.

She was inspired to fundraise for the RNLI after she was saved by lifeguards on Polzeath last summer.

Novice surfer Isabella, 24, decided to go for one last surf on 26 August, 2011 before heading home when she got into trouble in the waves and began swallowing water.

She was rescued by RNLI lifeguards and a surf instructor from the local surf school and brought back to the beach.

Lifeguards commenced emergency first aid and she was airlifted to hospital for further treatment.

She said: ‘It was a terrifying experience. One moment I saw the foamy whiteness of the waves and the next I swallowed so much water that I could no longer catch my breath. I could feel myself sinking in the water.

‘The lifeguards knew what they were doing and knew my condition. They had got me out of the water and stopped me from drowning; they had acted quickly and skilfully to get me conscious again and had managed to get me to a place of safety.

Just knowing this information now is enough to overwhelm me with gratitude towards these people whose job it is to keep people like me alive.

I dread to think what might have happened had they not been there or been so well trained.’

Isabella set off from Bude on Saturday (16 June) with her boyfriend Dominic Evans and friend Alex Bishop, camping along the route. She arrived into Polzeath on Tuesday afternoon and met the lifeguards working on the beach, including Mike Jones and Nathan Groves who were involved in her rescue last year.

She also returned a blanket the lifeguards had used to keep her warm during her rescue, which she’d carried in her rucksack the whole way!

She said: ‘The walk was very challenging, I’ve never done anything like it before and I’m not a walker but when I was finding it tough I just remembered why I was doing it and thinking about the RNLI and lifeguards kept me going. I’m stubbornly determined so there was no way I wasn’t going to complete it!

‘It’s unbelievable meeting the lifeguards that saved me, if it wasn’t for them I wouldn’t be here – it’s overwhelming.

It’s great to be able to say thank you in person and return the blanket they gave me, I hope they can use it to save somebody else.’
And her fundraising efforts don’t stop there.

Isabella is also planning a mile sponsored swim and a cake sale.

Bobby Renaud, RNLI Lifeguard Manager for North Cornwall, said: ‘We were very pleased to meet Isabella and her friends and hear about her fundraising efforts for the RNLI. It sounds like she had a fantastic walk and has raised a super amount of money for the RNLI.

“Without the support of people like Isabella the charity wouldn’t be able to carry out the lifesaving service it does around the county’s coastline and we are very grateful to her.

‘It was also very special for Isabella to meet some of the lifeguards who helped save her last year and it must have been an emotional experience for her.

‘The RNLI encourages any novice water users to be aware of their capabilities and have a chat with the RNLI lifeguards before they enter the water to find out the local conditions and ensure they have safe and enjoyable time.’

The picture shows Isabella with RNLI lifeguards on Polzeath beach on Tuesday. Pictured are RNLI lifeguard Mike Jones, Isabella Denyer, RNLI lifeguards Nathan Groves and John Bull.

The fifth Joe Way Paddle for life is all set to make a splash on Thursday 21st June

Last year 180 big-hearted fundraisers took to the water at Newquay harbour.

This year hundreds more have got their entries in and are ready to add to break through the £100,000 barrier for Joe’s charity.

The Paddle for Life started after lifeguards from Fistral Beach held a Joe Way memorial paddle to raise money for charity in 2008.

Since then ‘Team Joe’ and its supporters have raised over £98,000.00.

£69,000.00 has gone towards building Cornwall’s first children’s hospice, which opened two months ago.

The 2012 event will see Tiger 24 providing a live stream of the event once again to hundreds of online watchers and with international sensation Titan the robot appearing it will be another family fun action packed evening.

The event is run at zero cost as all the equipment, food and raffle prizes are donated so 100% of all the money goes to one of the 20 charities Joe’s story now supports.

The event, which is normally been held in September, has been moved to June to encourage more families, schools and surf clubs to take part as well as allowing the event to run later into the evening with more light and warmer seas.

Paddlers and swimmers ages start from 5 years upwards and the entry fee is £10 per adult and £5 per child (under 18’s) which is paid on the day with everyone also getting a certificate, free prize ticket and a discount voucher for food. The event is about family fun and everyone helps each other along.

The event starts at 4pm and the last registration and time in the water is 6.30pm so there is plenty of time to arrive when people have finished work, Titan the Robot and the lifeguard race is just after 6.30pm.

To watch and enjoy Titan is free and with the event being streamed live on line it’s another great showcase for Newquay.

Boards are provided with the lots of help from Newquay surf life savers so all you need is your wetsuit or trunks, swimmers and canoes are welcome.

Kids can paddler with parents and there will be dads against mum’s fun paddle.

Because the event takes place inside the harbour those who want to get wet and have fun can and for the people of all ages who want to paddle a bit further we have the space for that as well.

Matt Way Joe’s Dad said “It’s a great evening with loads to do on the beach, games for the kids, food stands and the amazing Titan the robot who is a huge crowd pleaser. We just want Joe’s story to inspire new people who then grab a board and paddle for charity”.

Many paddlers had not paddled before and two jet skis where on hand but everyone of all ages got back under their own steam as it became a real effort to make the late Newquay toddler proud.

Join the Cornish Charity Challengers revving up for Barcelona at £350 a head

by Gary Warren

Get Your Bangers Out for Charity!

Yes following on from our very successful Banger Rally in 2011, St Austell and District Round Table would like to invite you to enter the 2012 Charity Banger Rally Challenge from Cornwall to Barcelona.

This is an opportunity of a life time and is sure to be you a trip to remember.

We’ll be driving on some of Europe’s finest and most scenic roads.

The only snag is – your car can’t cost much more than a measly £350.

Our two two main charities are Cornwall Hospice Care (Mount Edgcumbe Hospice) and Bosom Buddies (Local breast cancer charity).

But if you like you could raise money for your own Charity or Community Organisation.

The rally will start on Thursday 20th September leaving The Cornwall Hotel at 6pm and finishing in Barcelona on Sunday 23rd September.

You will need to allow a further day to crush, flog or donate your trusty banger to an unwitting local, and fly home.

Or if by the time you’ve reached Spain you’ve fallen so in love with your boneshaker you just can’t let it go – you can always challenge yourself to drive back.

However you wind up we think 4 days charging about the English, French, Andorra & Spanish countryside in a rubbish car will definitely be a trip to remember.

To keep you and your passengers amused there will be several tasks to perform on route to earn bonus points, but if you just want to cruise through the countryside without taking part then that’s just as cool with us too.

Remember rule number 1, this is categorically not a race across Europe, but a leisurely drive by like-minded people, and there will be no advantage in arriving first.

Managing to coax your chosen wreck to the finish point should be rewarding enough but at the final night’s presentation ceremony, over £1000 worth of
cash prize’s will be awarded!

The overall winner will also receive a cash prize and a suitable trophy, while an additional prize of £300 will be awarded for the most imaginative/decorated car and there occupants.

Although every one who takes part is a winner, each participant will also be provided with an appropriately rubbish medal memento on finishing.

You are now probably thinking, will there be support on route! you are joking surely?

We’re sure you wouldn’t appreciate it if we deprived you of the uncertainty each day on whether you chosen chariot will make it to the next checkpoint, let alone start in the morning.

Breaking down miles from anywhere, on a mountain pass in a strange country must be top banana in the entertainment stakes and
worth the entry fee alone.

And we’re sure several teams will testify to this when they arrive back home!

Contest entry is £250, which is based on two people sharing a car; additional passengers will be charged at £60 per person.

Entrance fee includes welcoming and finishing party, t-shirts, route plan, prize money & camping.

Entries are limited, to guarantee a place in this much sought after event a deposit of £100 per car is required.

If you’re up for our banger challenge, just click HERE to get the full monty.

Or ring Gary Warren on 07734366506, or Tom Marshall on 07970135108.

A superfit local lad is cycling the 400 or so miles from London to Paris to raise money for Cornwall’s Little Harbour Hospice .

Sam King from Mabe will set out on his trusty 14 speed Dawes on May 9th.

The 19 year old, an apprentice plumber with local small businessman Charlie Goody, reached out to CCN readers to help him raise as much charity cash as possible.

Sam, whose Dad Stuart is a local plasterer, and whose mum Janet lectures child-care at Truro College, decided to complete the mammoth run just before Christmas.

He told CCN: “I cycle a lot around Cornwall anyway and really enjoy it – obviously it’s very hilly but that should stand me in good stead.”

“I chose the Hospice because they need every penny they can get and I think they’re a very deserving cause.”

To support Sam in his epic ride just click through to his Facebook page or if you’re local to Mabe pop into the Post Office where there’s a sponsors tin.

David on a mission to run London in memory of much missed Neil

An old fishing friend of Neil Murray, the popular Cornish fisherman who died at sea last March, is to run the London Marathon in his memory.

David Hunt is hoping to raise £2,000 for the Fishermans Mission making his way round the famous 26 mile course.

David, who comes from Neil’s home town of Looe, is running in a team for the NSPCC, the highly politicised and controversial corporate childrens charity.

But much pf the money he raises will go to the Mission, which helps support injured fishreman and the families of those who have perished working at sea.

To sponsor him click HERE

David explained: “Neil was a friend of mine and he was well known and well loved by everyone in the local community.

“I spent a fair bit of time with Neil at sea and got to know him well.

“He was very funny, very kind and a thoroughly decent man.

“I miss him but I do know for certain he would think I was bonkers signing up for the Marathon.”

Mr Murray’s widow Sheryll, who is also the local MP, said: “The Fisherman’s Mission provides emergency support for Fishermen and their families.

“I know how comforting it is to have them available when you need them most.

“So thank you David: I know Neil would really appreciate this fantastic effort.”

The London Marathon’s on 22nd April 2012.

Around 35,000 people take part. The race is 26 miles and 385 yards long.

Are you running the Marathon for a good cause? Let us know! Mail us here or just post below!

Head out on the Moorland..Big-hearted bikers raising cash for great causes

by Tom Howe

Christmas and New Year are out of the way and soon upon us will be Easter!

Moorlanders MCC, formed in 2001, is an established social motorcycle club based in Camelford and Bodmin Moor who spread a bit of fun and cheer at Easter time.

The club is best known for its annual Egg Run which has been held every Easter Sunday for the past 13 years.

In 2011, the run began at Davidstow Airfield, near Camelford.

Almost 500 bikers then took in Wadebridge, St Austell, Par, Minions and ended at Bowden Derra Park where there was a special event to mark ten years of Moorlanders MCC.

The bikers bring along their own Easter eggs and donate them for local special needs charities.

It was a record-breaking run for the group as they rose over £4,000.

The generous donations were divided equally between Action for Children, Bowden Derra and the ARB special needs units of primary schools in Camelford and Launceston.

The club also raised close to £500 by taking part in an abseil challenge for Children’s Hospice South West in June 2011.

Club Secretary Beth Holtum told the News: “Moorlanders MCC is a family friendly motorcycle club.

“We are a social club whose existence is rooted in the charity run, but it’s not our sole purpose.

“The Club meets regularly through the year for relaxed, social ride-outs in the local area, and to attend an active calendar of motorcycling events.

“Moorlanders are a small Club, with a varied membership from learners to life-long riders.”

In 2012, Easter Sunday falls on 8th April – so be sure to look out for the club on their bikes!
